Safe Start provides the state required 30 hours of classroom theory taught by PA state-certified instructors.
This course is broken down into 10 sessions, each of which are 3 hours in length. This curriculum covers a variety of necessary driving skills, including but not limited to: basic car control, roadway signs and signals, making safe driving decisions, rural and urban driving, parking, and making turns.
Making smart choices while driving is a skill every driver needs. This course provides our students with the knowledge of the dangers of driving at night, driving under adverse conditions and how to handle emergencies in a safe manner.
Each student receives a PA Driver’s Manual during the first session with an emphasis placed on the complete understanding of the rules of the road.
Safe Start also instructs drivers about the effects of using alcohol and other drugs while driving, including DUI and underage drinking laws.
The Behind-the-Wheel Program consists of the state required 6 hours of hands-on driver’s training.
Our state certified instructors will schedule individually with a student, working with their schedules. The Safe Start Program vehicles are used for the instruction, are fully insured and are equipped with an extra operable brake pedal for the instructors to use as a safety measure.
Each driver will be trained in the areas of proper hand-over-hand steering, turning, passing, entering/exiting highways and parking.
Our instructors help a driver to achieve appropriate speed control, navigate narrow roads and highways, and use defensive driving tactics to avoid crashes.
Our instructors are state certified to administer the driver’s license test to students who have completed both the theory and behind-the-wheel instruction.
The following are some of the most common risks that affect teen drivers as spelled out on the CDC website:
- Driver inexperience
- Driving with teen passengers
- Nighttime driving
- Not using seat belts
- Distracted driving
- Drowsy driving
- Reckless driving
- Impaired driving
The Safe Start Program addresses each major risk, giving your teen driver the training needed to safely operate a vehicle.
